Year 3

Regards from Miss Marfleet, Miss Richardson and a warm welcome to Miss Jagger who completes the Year 3 teacher team. We are fortunate to work with three teaching assistants across the year group: Mrs Doe, Mrs Cooper and Mrs Gillman. They support children within the classroom and provide additional learning opportunities through intervention groups.  During these times they help to consolidate, improve or challenge specific areas of learning.

Focus for Learning

We are beginning to learn about volcanoes. We will explore how they are formed, what happens when they erupt, where in the world they are found and much more. This will link in to much of our curriculum so any extra research you do at home is always useful.

In Maths, we will be learning about fractions, time and measurement. To help your children at home it would be fantastic to get them involved with any weighing, measuring or timing you may be doing and talking about time using an analogue clock and a digital clock. As always, it is important to keep up times tables practise for the multiplication test coming up in Year 4.

In English, we are learning to write a shape poem and focussing on using language for effect by selecting interesting and appropriate vocabulary and using thesauruses to improve our key words. Following this, we will be writing recounts, imagining that we had experienced the eruption of a volcano.

In Science, we are looking at light and investigating how the Earth's rotation informs time. We are hoping to have a forest school experience to enhance this learning but this is still to be determined.

Our question for RE is 'Do Sikhs think it is important to share?' and this will be supported in lesson time as well as the Christian ethos being celebrated in whole school Collective Worship.

The children will continue learning Spanish as their Modern Foreign Language.

In Music, our specialist teacher will carry on developing the children's knowledge of rhythm and rhyme in recorder building towards an end of term performance to the rest of the school community.

For the development of our Computing curriculum we are beginning to explore coding. We will be using code.org to programme, debug and design a computer game.

For PSHE we continue to build and discuss relationships within the class and wider school community and focus on achieving goals.

PE Days

3M have PE on Thursday

3N have PE on Friday

3R have PE on Friday

Swimming - All of year 3 will begin swimming on Tuesday 30th April 2019. They will continue to swim every Tuesday for the duration of the Summer term. Your child must bring a towel, a swimsuit for girls (not bikini or tankini) or swim shorts for boys, a swimming hat and goggles. These items all need to be named and should come in a separate swimming bag with a plastic bag for the children to put their wet clothes in. All children must come to school with a waterproof jacket/coat to walk to and from the swimming pool in, this is incase of bad weather so it is also wise to send a sunhat in case of good weather as the walk to and back can be quite long. Girls must have their hair tied back when they come to school that day.

The expectation across year 3 is that PE kits come into school on a Monday, and then remain in school for the duration of the week as timetables can change and additional sport is sometimes added. Swimming bags will come home on Tuesday evening as they will contain wet clothes and this will allow their normal kit to stay in school for the week.

Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit, including clothing to match weather conditions such as sun hats, sunscreen and water bottles for when the weather gets warmer. Please ensure all kit is named and that on PE days children with pierced ears have earrings removed and that any long hair is tied back when they come to school and remains tied up throughout the day.

Autumn 1 - Hockey and Tennis

Autumn 2 - Rugby and Yoga

Spring 1 - Gymnastics and Dance

Spring 2 - Netball and Tag Rugby

Summer 1 -  Athletics and Swimming

Homework Expectations

The students in year 3 have homework set on a Thursday, which is due in by the following Tuesday. There is an expectation that the children complete 30 minutes of Lexia every week alongside one of the following:

It is also helpful for students to practise a different times table each weeks. By the end of the year children need to know their 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables.

As a team we value the time that you take to encourage your children to read regularly, practise their spellings and complete their homework. If you are having issues logging onto Lexia, please see the guidance below. Should you continue to have problems please see your class teacher as soon as possible.

Reading

There is a huge emphasis on reading within the curriculum and it is taught discretely in daily reading sessions. Reading is core element in many other curriculum areas. Children are taught how to analyse a text through the 7 core strands. These strands focus on: vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval, summarising and sequencing.

Reading books are changed regularly. Please remember to write in your child's reading log so we can ensure they are rewarded when they reach 50, 100 and 200 reads.

We are fortunate enough to have a fantastic library which the children are encouraged to use. They are able to access the library most mornings first thing and on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtime from 12:30 - 1:00pm.

Spellings

Spellings are given on a Friday and tested the following Friday and should be practised regularly at home.

If your child misplaces their spellings or would like an additional copy to practise at home, there are always extra copies in each classroom.

Come and see us!

If you have any questions, concerns or queries please come and see a member of the Year 3 team. We are available on the gate at the end of the school day or please arrange an appointment at the office if you require a longer meeting.
